Zalora Malaysia Experience

9:35 AM

Hey there!

It's the last day of 2016. Here's to hoping that 2017 will be an awesome year.

Anyway.. I bought a couple of clothes (crop tops, shorts, dress, bag) from Zalora and I want to share my experience with the website. This is the second time I've purchased from Zalora. The first time I bought a pair of Nike sneakers (and a set of Puma socks) because I couldn't find any shoes in stock at physical locations that were 1. my size 2. affordable and 3. black and white.

I usually clean out my closet twice a year because I have a lot of clothes that I never wear (impulse purchases) so I donate them to charity or sell them on Carousell (if I'm not feeling too lazy). This also means that I always wear the same clothes of a certain style and I end up wanting to get more clothes 😅

It's not easy to find clothes that actually suit my taste. I've been shopping online for years and I'm not very fond of the Korean style that can be found on most Malaysian online stores. My preference is more towards the Pinterest and Tumblr styles which Zalora (kinda) provides. I prefer to buy secondhand or inspired clothes from Carousell (if the seller has a high rating) when stuff on Zalora is too expensive.

I've been 'writing' this post for almost a month now because it took some time to take the photos and figure out what information I should add into it. It always bothers me when I read reviews and they don't post any photos.. so I tried to put some extra effort into writing this. Hope it doesn't bother people that this is a really long post 😅

Note:  Always use promo codes when you use Zalora.

You can save at least 10-20% by using promo codes from ShopCoupons or CupoNation

Clothing sizes: One reason why people don't buy their clothes online is because they're worried that they'd end up buying the wrong size. Based on my prior experience, my size varies from S to M. Without measuring myself, it's difficult to tell what my size actually is. I found a size guide on Zalora and followed it according to my H&M (dresses/tops) and Cotton On (jeans) measurements.

Shoe sizes: One thing to note about Nike's shoe size: Depending on how narrow/wide your feet is, sometimes you need to get 1/2 to 1 full size bigger than your usual feet size. I'm a size 38 but I bought 38.5 instead (after reading Amazon reviews on Nike shoes) and it fits perfectly.

Shipping Fees Information:

Just realized that 7 out of the 8 items I purchased are black... I guess you can tell what my favorite color is ._.

→ As for the terms in the description for each item listed below:
  • Discount refers to the money saved after applying a promo code.
  • The prices in smaller font for the original price is the price before store discount.
Meaning that it is a double discount item.

Women's Nike Flex Run 2016 Shoes
Original price: RM 319
Purchase price: RM 255.20
Discount : 20% (RM 63.80)

I bought these because I've always wanted black and white shoes and I've used my old sports shoes for more than 3-4 years.

  • Lightweight
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Great breathability
  • Amazing arch support
  • Sizing is narrow, which I prefer because most normal shoes are too wide for me

  • Shoelaces come undone often, but this is probably my fault because I suck at tying them. Not much of an issue because I double-knot them.

New Look Black Sleeveless Bodycon Dress
Original price : RM 89.00 RM 79.00

I wanted a bodycon dress I could wear casually so I got this. I think I'll sell this off on Carousell because I'm not satisfied with the fit of it. It's more of a loose t-shirt dress than a bodycon and the scrunched look at the neck of it bothers me.

MDS Collections Danette Crop Top in Black

Original price : RM 159.00 RM 79.90
Purchase price: RM 64.00
Discount: 20% (RM 16.00)

I was intrigued by the unique design of the crop top. I think it's expensive - normally I wouldn't buy tops that cost more than RM 50 but I couldn't resist this one given my fondness for lace detailing and black clothes. It looks great but it feels quite hot and stuffy when the weather is humid. It also has a zipper at the back, which makes it easier to put on.

Something Borrowed's Embroidery Detail Crop Top
Original price: RM 59.00 RM 49.00
Purchase price: RM 39.20
Discount: 20% (RM 9.80)
I think my weakness for crop tops and silver stud detailing is evident... I think the price is on par with stores like Kitschen and H&M. I love this top, but had to exchange it to a size M from S because it was way too tight and I almost got stuck in it. It would have been better to have a zipper at the back. It's quite comfy to wear though.

Something Borrowed's Frayed Hem Denim Shorts
In black.
In blue.

Original price: RM 59.00 RM 49.00
Purchase price: RM 39.20
Discount: 20% (RM 9.80)

I only had 2 pairs of shorts out of 4 that I could still wear since I lost weight two years ago. It was hard for me to find shorts that aren't too short because I'm 5'6" and skinny-ish.

Managed to buy the right size so it fits perfectly 😃 It's very comfortable to wear and high-waisted which makes it suitable to wear with crop tops.

The back of the shorts being longer than the front looks weird, but I don't really mind.

Something Borrowed's Denim Knit Skinny Jeans
Original price: RM 109.00 RM 79.00
Purchase price: RM 59.00
Discount: RM 20.00

Initially bought a wrap skort but it was too big for me and I wasn't a fan of the design, so I sent it back for store credit and got this pair of black skinny jeans instead. The jeans aren't as tight-fitting and constrictive as I expected it to be. There are zippers at the sides near the ankles. One issue I have is that the zipper that zips up the jeans tends to unzip sometimes, so I have to use a key ring to keep it in place.

JackBox PU Leather Sling Bag
Original price: RM 30.74
With shipping cost: RM 5.00
Purchase price: RM 35.74

Decided to get this, as a casual alternative to my backpacks. It has a zipper-less pocket at the back which might be useful to put earphones or tissue into. A mini pocket compartment inside the bag to keep small stuff. The bag is bigger than I expected it to be though.

(I bought this at the same time with the clothes but in a different order, so I had to pay for the shipping.)

I've read mixed reviews about Zalora. Some have complained about not receiving their order on time (or at all) and Zalora claiming that the product is out of stock after the buyer purchased it (but they do refund you in store credit). Personally, my own experiences have been positive but I definitely hope that I won't have a negative experience in the future. If you're worried about not receiving your order, you can always opt for COD so you don't have to go through the process of getting a refund.

Update (2018): I've bought items which I later returned for a refund because they didn't suit me. It takes some time, but I always get my money back. So yeah, I'm very grateful that they offer this option since buying stuff online is always tricky since it might look and feel completely different in real life.

Regarding the quality of the products, it depends on the brand - since Zalora is actually a marketplace that has a variety of brands ranging from low-end to high-end; and it doesn't entirely reflect on the brand itself (unless it's something from Zalora or Something Borrowed). If you purchase something from an established brand (e.g. Nike and Puma), the quality is as expected. If you buy something from an unknown's usually a hit-or-miss situation. My advice would be to research the brand as much as you can.

I received my items fairly quick, within 2-3 days of making my order. Not sure if it's because I'm in Selangor (and live near K.L.) or if the service is generally that fast. They do give an estimated shipping time-frame, which helps because otherwise I wouldn't know when someone should be at home to collect the parcel.

They also send an SMS to inform you when the order is on the way, but they don't update the info on the website as fast. I don't use my phone when I'm doing work on my laptop, so that can be a problem for me, especially when I forget that I ordered something when I'm focusing on my work ._.  (2018 Update) I use the Zalora app now, and they updated the information (when it was packed, shipped and delivered) very quickly.

  • More affordable than other stores
  • Variety of brands and products
  • Offers a ton of payment methods
  • Free delivery for purchases over RM 75
  • Fast delivery
  • Order update through SMS
  • Promo codes available online
  • Usually have discounts on certain items
  • User-friendly website (complete with FAQ and guides)
  • 30-day return policy
  • Cash on Delivery available

  • Some buyers had bad experiences with one of the courier services - NinjaVan (but my delivery was okay..thankfully)
  • Buyer might receive low quality product if it's an unknown brand
  • Order tracking not regularly updated on website
  • Inconsistency between stock availability on the app and website

Overall, I love shopping on Zalora Malaysia and it's likely that I will purchase more items from them in the future. Just not any time soon, because I don't think I can afford to splurge on clothes again.. and I should save my money for camera gear (or spend my money wisely on food) instead. I think there are some things Zalora could do to improve (↑ cons) though.

Anyway, till next time!
